What is the first word that strikes our mind while buying or selling anything? Benefit. This question might make it sound strictly transactional, but one cannot deny its role as one of the many driving forces that contribute to our daily motivation. It is the most powerful incentive that fuels our ambition when there is no known reason left, especially for people in the business world. While its advantages cannot be dismissed out of hand, it is not always monetary by nature. Its influences can be seen far and wide in every aspect of our lives, be it professional, emotional, or educational.
Nowadays, the most sought-after field in terms of benefits is unquestionably that of education. The amount of investment that it requires makes people expectant for a fruitful result. And they are right in doing so. Everyone wants their children to excel academically so that they constantly soar to new heights in their occupation, and make their parents proud. Therefore, as a significant asset, they are closely scrutinized since the early days of schooling.
But studies are not sufficient in themselves. One needs to go beneath the four walls of a classroom for all-around development in the form of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. And that is what the International Mathematics Olympiad intends to do.
But how exactly does it do that? Let us find out more about it.
IMO is an acronym that stands for International Mathematics Olympiad. One can date back its origin to Romania since 1959. It comes under the International Science Olympiad(ISO), which regulates the conduction of this test across the countries of the world. There are several other fields formally recognized for evaluation by the ISO, such as-
In India, the liability of organizing this exam on a national level falls on the Science Olympiad Foundation(SOF). SOF IMO is held for three days across the country. Classes from 1-12 can participate in the first level of the competition. Those who clear the first round go on to compete on an international level.
The questions are objective-type multiple-choice questions of one mark each. There are a total of 35 questions for classes 1-4, whereas classes 5-12 have to attempt 50 questions in one hour. To get a more in-depth description, one can examine the IMO Class 8 Previous Year Paper 2012.
Various perks come along by participating in the IMO. They are elaborated as follows-
Class 1 and 2 | Award for 1st Level winners |
Classes 3-12 | Class, zonal, and international topper awards for 2nd Level winners |
If the second-level exams are not feasible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then for the year 2021-22, the Level 1 exam results will be treated as final.
Awards for performance in Level 1
5-9 students writing the exam | Gold medal to the topper of the class |
10-25 students writing the exam | Gold medal to top 3 rank holders of the class |
More than 25 students writing the exam | Gold medal to top 10% rank holders in the class |
Every student is also handed a Student Performance Report(SPR), which gives a detailed analysis of his/her performance in various sections of the question paper. An SPR consists of 5 sections, namely:
