In a recent statement from Gizmochina, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, told in an interview with Xinhua that the company is continuing to focus more on 5G smartphones and moving forward to 2021.
Xiaomi will end manufacturing 4G smartphones. The 5G push was supposed to happen at a faster rate, but the COVID-19 pandemic discouraged all the efforts.
The recently launched Redmi 10X series is primarily a 5G smartphone series, while the Redmi K30 series also got a more affordable 5G variant in the form of the Redmi K30i.
Redmi 10X Pro 5G smartphone was launched on 26th May 2020. The phone comes with a 6.57-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20:9. Redmi 10X Pro 5G is powered by a 2.6GHz octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 820 processor.
Lei Jun states that 5G is going to change the smartphone industry, and with faster connectivity, it will allow activities like 4K/8K video conferencing, cloud gaming, and auto-pilot.
Some European markets, as well as the US markets, have also jumped on to 5G networks. For other leading global markets, 5G is yet to be present.
India is yet to see 5G networks, and it seems it could take up to 2022 to see the first 5G networks go live. Xiaomi’s push for 5G seems legit, given that its home market has already begun seeing 5G networks massively.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 820 chipset has already shown that with the Redmi 10X series and in the months to come, we can require more affordable 5G smartphones with cheaper 5G chips from both MediaTek and Qualcomm.
Currently, in India, the only 5G smartphone Xiaomi sells the Mi 10, and that uses a Snapdragon 865, which is bundled with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem.
India is yet to see mobiles with affordable 5G chips, but in the coming months, we may see phones using the Snapdragon 765G chipset as well as the MediaTek Dimensity 820 chipset.
In the interview, Lei Jun also stated that Xiaomi has also started pre-research on 6G technology as well as Satellite Internet technology.
